50 MW WPP 87 Wind Farm, California






















The 50 MW Windpower Partners 87 (WPP 87) wind farm is located on farm land near Livermore, California, which operates under a long-term power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E).  We own a portion of this project, along with our partners.  We also provide the operation and maintenance services for this project.

Overall, we own and operate four wind power projects in California, consisting of over 900 wind turbines, totaling 95,000 kilowatts of clean, renewable wind power for the San Francisco Bay Area — please visit our Projects page to see more of our California projects.

Our four California wind farms provide the energy supply for about 30,000 homes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

 

For clarification, the information below includes the climate, environmental and societal benefits of all four of our California wind farms, totaling 95,000 kW ( 95 MW).


Climate and Environmental Benefits.  The renewable energy produced by wind power is clean and non-polluting (i.e., no emissions).  As compared with the energy produced by a fossil-fired power plant, the environmental attributes and air emissions/pollution savings benefits of our four California wind farms, totaling 95 MW, are estimated as follows:

 
◆  equivalent reduced natural gas consumption of 615,000,000 cubic feet per year


◆  reduces equivalent coal consumption and mining of 25,000 tons per year

 

◆  reduces dependence on imported oil, saving the consumption of 109,000 barrels per year

 

◆  reduced water pollution/consumption of 46,000,000 gallons per year

 

◆  equivalent avoided emissions/pollution of 197,000,000 lbs of CO2 per year, which reduces the impacts of global warming and climate change

 

◆  equivalent to planting about 7,600,000 trees (or a 33,000 acre forest), because trees naturally absorb CO2

 

The emissions/pollution SAVED (or prevented) during the 20-year life of our wind farms — about 4 billion pounds of NOx, SOx, Particulate Matter, and CO2 — would cover over 2,200 square miles of land one foot deep!  Wow!  For more information about the environmental benefits of wind power, please visit our Health and Climate Benefits of Wind Power page.

Money pileSocial and Economic Benefits.  Wind power is a renewable energy resource that reduces the region's dependence on fossil fuels.  The “fuel” for this energy resource — the wind — is natural, abundant, and free/renewable, which reduces the impact of fossil fuel price volatility on PG&E and their customers.

 

Our California wind farms are a boost to California’s economy through local expenditures on materials, tools, supplies, and equipment purchases, as well as, through the creation of long-term high-skilled employment.  The local economic benefits (direct and indirect) over 20 years from our four California wind farms is estimated to be roughly $180 million (in 2008 dollars), including payroll from high-skilled jobs, land owner/farmer land leases, property taxes, sales taxes, business taxes, various services purchased from local retailers, etc.

 

Diseased lungsHealth Savings.  Further, the hidden economic burdens placed on society from air pollution created by coal and gas-fired power generation is huge — the costs to “medicate” and “repair” our society, based upon the various air pollution values mentioned above, is roughly estimated at $300 million, which comprises health care and disease costs (such as, premature deaths, heart attacks, lung cancer, asthma attacks, hospital admissions, chronic bronchitis, and lost works/sick days) plus damage to property, climate, forests, rivers, crops, livestock, etc., as well as, impacts to public services.  Therefore, the clean, renewable power from our California wind farms save our society roughly $300 million over 20 years in health and societal costs (in 2008 dollars).
